I've incorporated modeling activities into almost every course I've taught every year I've taught. I've slowly made them a little more open-ended and I've changed the method for generating regression equations from using an online regression calculator, to using a TI-84, to using Desmos, to using Google Sheets.
In each of these activities, we follow a similar procedure to investigate the relationship between two variables:
- Collect data for 3-4 small samples
- Look for patterns in the data
- Graph the data
- Generate an equation to represent the data
- Use the equation to make a prediction
- Test the prediction
Some of my favorite relationships include the following:
- Number of pennies vs Number of noodles
- Ball drop height vs Ball bounce height
- Barbie bungee (or action figure bungee since we had Iron Man and Flynn Ryder)
- Number of pennies vs balance point
- Volume of water vs Height of water
