Algebraic Modeling

Image Name

I've incorporated modeling activities into almost every course I've taught every year I've taught. I've slowly made them a little more open-ended and I've changed the method for generating regression equations from using an online regression calculator, to using a TI-84, to using Desmos, to using Google Sheets.

In each of these activities, we follow a similar procedure to investigate the relationship between two variables:

  1. Collect data for 3-4 small samples
  2. Look for patterns in the data
  3. Graph the data
  4. Generate an equation to represent the data
  5. Use the equation to make a prediction
  6. Test the prediction

Some of my favorite relationships include the following:

  • Number of pennies vs Number of noodles
  • Ball drop height vs Ball bounce height
  • Barbie bungee (or action figure bungee since we had Iron Man and Flynn Ryder)
  • Number of pennies vs balance point
  • Volume of water vs Height of water
